RADA App Officially Launched During Nairobi Innovation Week 2019

The student developed Mobile health application has officially been launched during the Nairobi Innovation Week 2019. In a Ceremony that was filled with pomp and color the students who developed the application took the attendants through the features of the app, how to access information about sexual and reproductive health, professionalcounseling, peer counseling and how to ask for help when in an emergency situation example rape and/or physical abuse. While delivering her keynote speech, UNESCO Regional Director, Ms Anne Theresa hailed the University of Nairobi and the students that took part in this initiative. She noted that this conversation started in the previous Nairobi Innovation Week 2018.UNESCO and the university through the Centre for HIV Prevention and Research (CHIVPR)undertook research on issues affecting the youth and how the issues could be tackled. It emerged that students spend more time on digital platforms and devices more than their books. Therefore,it was established that through a Mobile application, students can be reached to tackle the issues of mental health, alcohol and drug abuse, sexual and reproductive health. Ms Anne Theresa charged the University with a mandate to bring change through this innovation not only at the UoN but to all the other institutions of higher learning in Africa. On his part, UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithiappreciated the support that UNESCO offered and all the other partners including Ministry of health, NACADA, NASCOP, I choose Life, Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRHR Alliance) in seeing the success of this innovation. When delivering his welcoming remarks, Prof. Walter Jaoko, Project Lead, highlighted on the fact that University students are usually in a transition from adult supervision to freedom; they are faced with the challenge of what’s permissible, what’s not and to what extent. Perris Onyambu, Marketing Manager at Kenya Network Information Centre (KENIC) donated a .ke domain for the Rada App, “It is important for all the information of the mobile application to be on a website.”A representative of the group of students, that developed the app, Musa Ibrahim, urged all the university students to download the app; citing that it will also be used to pass information on campus events and announcements. On her part, Ms Anne Mwangi, UNSA Chair and ambassador of the RADA App, “When I was asked to be the Ambassador of this app, I quickly agreed because it is an innovation by the comradesfor the comrades. I believe that this is a tool that will change the lives of youth in the whole of Africa.”The App is accessible through Google Play store.
